The Brazilian commercial aviation between 1950-1970

the Real, Panair and Cruzeiro do Sul crisis

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the crisis faced by the Real, Panair and Cruzeiro do Sul airlines companies in the period between 1950 until 1970, as well as the introduction of new technologies in this area, like the jet plane. The used methodology was the analysis of the informative documents of the studied companies; from the bibliographic sources about the subject, the media reports, the specialized websites and the specific laws of the airline sector, in order to reflect about the proposed questions. It was concluded that the problems had several causes, such as: the external dependence of countries which manufacture aeronautical technology; the exchange variations, the petrol price; and the formulation of a clear and continuous aeronautics policy focusing on the development of an own aeronautical industry. The strong competition, most of the time predatory, between the private companies and the planes low occupancy, besides the management problems and the lack of planning, contributed to increase the crisis. The fusion of the companies and the strong competition marked that period.
