Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the historic evolution of armament (canons and missiles) utilized to defeat opponents in air combat. Aircraft and armament used in air combat during the conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yom Kippur, and Falkland (Malvinas), were discussed. The research for this work was primarily bibliographical, using secondary sources, in an effort to present a comprehensive historic account. Finally, the research shows the gradual change from cannon to missile as the main weapon of destruction in air combat. Secondarily, it was also observed that the individual pilot training, as well as experience in air combat, were decisive in achieve victories in the air.
