A New "Brazilian Air Force" in the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract

The article addresses the importance of the Amazon Region for Brazil, highlighting the economic, social, political, and military challenges. Since 1964, various projects have been implemented, such as the Trans-Amazonian highway and the Manaus Free Trade Zone, in addition to military and scientific initiatives. SIVAM and SIPAM are mentioned as essential systems for surveillance and monitoring of the region. The text also discusses international conflicts and their implications for South America, emphasizing the need for prospective studies. International pressure, drug trafficking, and the creation of indigenous areas are pointed out as significant problems. Drug trafficking is described as a highly profitable trade, with Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru being major coca producers. Furthermore, the article addresses the presence of guerrilla groups such as the FARC and the Shining Path, and their implications for regional security. The importance of the Brazilian Air Force in the Amazon is emphasized, highlighting the need for modernization and expansion of its presence. The FX Project is mentioned as crucial for acquiring new aircraft and technologies.
