Abstract

The publication of a new concept of air navigation, called RNP AR, triggered an interest in increasing the knowledge on the aspects that affect aerodrome operating minima calculation, particularly regarding the obstacle influence. In this sense, the present study aimed to examine to what extent the concept RNP AR could reduce the influence that the terrain exerts on determining the approach operating minima of Santos Dumont 02R runway and of Joinville Airport 15 runway. According to the proposed methodology, the work started with the presentation of the theoretical framework, particularly regarding the definition of aerodrome operating minima and the description of RNP AR concept. Then, experimental research was conducted and the aerodromes operating minima were calculated. At the end of the study, after comparing the results with the current operating minima, it was observed that the RNP AR concept led to a reduction of the aerodrome operating minima of Joinville Airport, which could promote an improvement in the operational conditions in this aerodrome. However, the same result was not achieved at the Santos Dumont airport, which means that the RNP AR concept cannot be applied to all situations and that a
careful analysis must be performed before its implementation.
