The conflict in Kosovo reflects the ethnic and nationalist tensions that permeate the Balkan Peninsula. The region, marked by centuries of foreign domination and territorial disputes, witnessed the rise of Serbian nationalism in the late 20th century, culminating in a series of violent conflicts. NATO's intervention in 1999 was a turning point, resulting in the establishment of a UN protectorate in Kosovo. The struggle for sovereignty and ethnic identity remains a central theme, with the Albanian population seeking recognition and autonomy, while Serbia maintains its claims over the region. The legacy of hatred and violence continues to influence relations between communities, complicating the construction of lasting peace.
