Abstract

The article "The Airplane in the Contestado Campaign" examines the use of aviation during the Contestado Campaign, a conflict that took place between 1912 and 1916 in the regions of Santa Catarina and Paraná, Brazil. The monk José Maria, leader of the rebels, mobilized followers in a fight against legalist forces. Aviation, which was beginning to be recognized as a weapon of war, piqued the interest of Brazilian military leaders, especially after combat experiences in Europe. In 1914, aviator Cícero Marques offered his services to assist in the fight, but his request for an airplane was not accepted. With the arrival of General Fernando Setembrino de Carvalho in command of federal forces, aviation was finally considered for aerial reconnaissance, aiming to identify enemy positions. The article highlights the importance of aviation in the military context and how this new technology began to shape combat strategies.
