Abstract

The article discusses the growing geopolitical significance of Antarctica, highlighting its vast natural resources such as oil, coal, and uranium, as well as its strategic location for air and sea routes. The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959, establishes guidelines for the peaceful use of the continent and freedom of scientific research, preventing military conflicts. Brazil, through the National Commission for Antarctic Affairs (CONANTAR), aims to protect its interests in the region, similar to what Alaska represents for the U.S. The article also draws parallels between the occupation of Antarctica and the colonization of Africa, emphasizing the challenges and rivalries that arise around resource exploitation.
